Internet Cowards: a Sign of the Times

by Michael Bunker editor@lazarusunbound.com

Permalink 09:53:08 am, Categories: General, 1363 words

Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard,
It seems to me most strange that men should fear;
Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.
William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)

Chivalry

by David McCrory from The Confederate Christian

The ancient art of chivalry began in the medieval period of Western Europe. Chivalry is derived through the French cheval from the Latin caballus and is closely related to the idea of a horsebound warrior. The Code of Chivalry was expected to guide the actions of men in all military, social and religious aspects of life.

Some of the more interesting characteristics of chivalry in military life stemmed from the fact that the Church taught against the use of long-range weapons for Christian armies. This thinking was perpetuated by the Christian idea regarding the sanctity of all life and the inherent tragedy in taking it. In times of war, the taking of a life was considered so serious, it was thought you should be looking the person in the eye (the window to the soul) you were killing. The phrase, "stabbing someone in the back" is still used today to denote a cowardly act and is a reflection of this period. It was expected of you to respect your opponent and even honor them in their death.

The Road Not Taken

by Clyde Wilson

The Southern Agrarians and the New Deal: Essays After I’ll Take My Stand
edited by Emily S. Bingham
and Thomas A. Underwood
Charlottesville: University Press of
Virginia; 310 pp., $45.00

The 1930’s were marked by intellectual trauma as well as by economic hardship. What had caused the apparent catastrophic crash of “capitalism”—collapse of equity, vanishing demand, and vast unemployment? The desire to diagnose the cause and prescribe a remedy created many ideas and movements. Some achieved success of a sort, and others went unheeded.

Confederate Connections:
The American Revolution and American Life

by Clyde Wilson

A friend of mine, a scholar of international reputation and a Tar Heel by birth, was visiting professor at a very prestigious Northern university a few years ago. In idle conversation with some colleagues, he happened to mention that his mother was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

His colleagues were shocked with disbelief. Their families had come from remote parts of Europe long after the War for Southern Independence. Their understanding of American history went like this: America had been founded by noble, freedom and equality loving patriots, And then that noble founding had been saved by other great patriots against a wicked rebellion of traitors seeking only to preserve the un-American institution of slavery. How could one celebrate both the founding and the treason?

Southern Culture: What's your sign?
Friday, May 12 @ 13:45:51 CDT by (535 reads)
Agrarian Interestron writes "
WHAT'S YOUR SOUTHERN SIGN?

Some of us Southerners are pretty skeptical of horoscopes and the people that read them. If we are to ever fully understand all the star signs and the people they represent, we need symbols that all true Southerners understand: See the list below...

OKRA (Dec 22 - Jan 20) Are tough on the outside but tender on the inside. Okras have tremendous influence. An older Okra can look back over his life and see the seeds of his influence everywhere. You can do something good each day if you try.

CHITLIN (Jan 21 - Feb 19) Chitlins come from humble backgrounds. A Chitlin, however, will make something of himself if he is motivated and has lots of seasoning. In dealing with Chitlins, be careful they may surprise you. They can erupt like Vesuvius. Chitlins are best with Catfish and Okra.

BOLL WEEVIL (Feb 20 - March 20) You have an overwhelming curiosity.

You're unsatisfied with the surface of things, and you feel the need to bore deep into the interior of everything. Needless to say, you are very intense and driven as if you had some inner hunger. You love to stay busy and tend to work too much. Nobody in their right mind is going to marry you, so don't worry about it.

MOON PIE (March 21 - April 20) You're the type that spends a lot of time on the front porch. A cinch to recognize the physical appearance of Moon Pies. Big and round are the key words here. You should marry anybody who you can get remotely interested in the idea. It's not going to be easy. You always have a big smile and are happy. This might be the year to think about aerobics. Maybe not.

POSSUM (April 21 - May 21) When confronted with life's difficulties, possums have a marked tendency to withdraw and develop a don't-bother-me-about-it attitude. Sometimes you become so withdrawn, people actually think you're dead. This strategy is probably not psychologically healthy but seems to work for you. You are a rare breed. Most folks love to watch you work and play. You are a night person and mind your own business.

CRAWFISH (May 22 - June 21) Crawfish is a water sign. If you work in an office, you're hanging around the water cooler. Crawfish prefer the beach to the mountains, the pool to the golf course, and the bathtub to the living room. You tend not to be particularly attractive physically, but you have very, very good heads.

COLLARDS (June 22 - July 23) Collards have a genius for communication.

They love to get in the melting pot of life and share their essence with the essence of those around them. Collards make good social workers, psychologists, and baseball managers. As far as your personal life goes, if you are Collards, stay away from Crawfish. It just won't work. Save yourself a lot of heartache.

CATFISH (July 24 - Aug 23) Catfish are traditionalists in matters of the heart, although one's whiskers may cause problems for loved ones.

You Catfish are never easy people to understand. You run fast. You work and play hard. Even though you prefer the muddy bottoms to the clear surface of life, you are liked by most. Above all else, Catfish should stay away from Moon Pies.

GRITS (Aug 24 - Sept 23) Your highest aim is to be with others like yourself. You like to huddle together with a big crowd of other Grits.

You love to travel though, so maybe you should think about joining a club. Where do you like to go? Anywhere they have cheese, gravy, bacon, butter, or eggs and a good time. If you can go somewhere where they have all these things, that serves you well. You are pure in heart.

BOILED PEANUTS (Sept 24 - Oct 23) You have a passionate desire to help your fellow man. Unfortunately, those who know you best, your friends and loved ones, may find that your personality is much too salty, and their criticism will affect you deeply because you are really much softer than you appear. You should go right ahead and marry anybody you want to because in a certain way, yours is a charmed life. On the road of life, you can be sure that people will always pull over and stop for you.

BUTTER BEAN (Oct 24 - Nov 22) Always invite a Butter Bean to a party because Butter Beans get along well with everybody. You, as a Butter Bean, should be proud. You've grown on the vine of life, and you feel at home no matter what the setting. You can sit next to anybody. However, you, too, shouldn't have anything to do with Moon Pies.

ARMADILLO (Nov 23 - Dec 21) You have a tendency to develop a tough exterior, but you are actually quite gentle and kind inside. A good evening for you? Old friends, a fire, some roots, fruit, worms, and insects. You are a throwback. You're not concerned with today's fashions and trends. You're not concerned with anything about today. You're almost prehistoric in your interests and behavior patterns. You probably want to marry another Armadillo, but a Possum is another somewhat kinky mating possibility.

Southern Culture: The Anti-Christian Battle Hymn
Wednesday, October 26 @ 16:30:41 CDT by (876 reads)
Agrarian InterestDebbie writes "The Anti-Christian Battle Hymn
By David O. Jones

A Critical Exposition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic

The "Battle Hymn of the Republic" occupies a prominent position not only within the program of nearly every nationalistic celebration, but also as part of many Christian services. Admittedly, the anthem sounds good, but it is far from being a “hymn” in the traditional sense of the word. Many Christians understand its stirring words to provide an image of a victorious Church, but the connotations of a spiritual patriotism which have endeared it to many, result from a mistaken and cursory reading of the song.

Southern Culture: Roundheaded cavaliers?
Tuesday, August 23 @ 17:42:15 CDT by (856 reads)
Agrarian InterestCAMoore writes "Intro: To me this qualifies as "breaking news" because it is news which breaks down a lot of mythical walls. As a Christian, I have long held sympathy for the early New England Puritans. But as a Southron who has read a good deal of Southern literature, I have been slow to embrace New England Puritanism on account of the fact that it is so often credited for stirring up that rabid Northern anti-slavery sentiment which helped fuel the war.

The argument about Southrons unanimously being descendants of Norman Cavaliers has never held any water with me, because I know that many of my own ancestors migrated down South after the Revolutionary War. My home county is named Washington County in honor of the U.S. President who gave our family land in recompense for our service in the war. Although many among the old Southern aristocracy may truly have been Cavalier descendants, it would seem that far fewer of the common people were. Yet, the mythical antagonism between a Southern Norman Cavalier society and a Northern Saxon Puritan society continues in the South. Several fellow SCV members hold this strange doctrine.

However, this article does a good job of debunking it. Particularly poignant to me are the following excerpts:

Even before the war, the Rev. John Bocock had warned that "never were two things of the same name much less identical in spirit and intrinsic character than the English Puritanism of the seventeenth century and the Yankee Puritanism of the nineteenth." He concluded that "like all imitators, the modern spirit has copied the mere defects, but few or none of the greatnesses of the ancient."

And the words of the Presbyterian minister William T. Hall:
"We--not the Pantheistic despots of New England but we of the South" were "the Puritans in this controversy, if any Puritans in it there be." Deo Vindice!

Text:
By the Civil War, race had become an indispensable means of organizing
American life. The colonial imperative of identifying and controlling black
slaves was joined in the early 1800 by struggles over who might claim
whiteness in the new republic. As several recent scholars have detailed,
racial identities became a national fixation in the two generations after
the American Revolution, evident in everything from party politics to
blackface minstrelsy to a steadily increasing paranoia about future
"amalgamation." Most racial discourses within the United States prior to
1865 extended Enlightenment themes of scientific difference by using skin
color to categorize humanity. A racialized citizenry secured its
geographical frontiers against the claims of red Indians and brown
Mexicans, while in 1857 the Supreme Court established internal boundaries
by disqualifying all African Americans from national citizenship. By the
1840s, the notion that "race is everything" had become a favored slogan
among racialists in Great Britain. During the same period, this phrase
aptly summed up lived experience within America's white republic. (1)

The only hope for anyone who desires to truly understand and obey the Holy Scriptures, is a return to both the Biblical culture and worldview where the scriptures were at home... Doctrine, Culture and Worldview... these things are not unconnected, except if we are to count that all three have been abandoned by modernist religion.
