Preparation of the Sabbath
The Preparation of the Sabbath is a term that is used to denote the day leading up to the Sabbath which will begin that evening as the sun goes down. Traditionally this was a time of preparation for families so that they could honor the Sabbath by not doing work on that day. The Preparation of the Sabbath is a type (or shadow) of the time we live in (so long as we live) as we prepare to enter into the Lord's Sabbath rest. That this was the practice of Israel is evident (Luke 23:54) both in scripture and in history, and it is also alluded to mystically by Christ when he says, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work" (John 9:4). Each Preparation of the Sabbath, we should not only be diligent in our duties so that we do not have to defile the Lord's Sabbath through work, but we should also consider and ruminate on the fact that this Preparation is given as a type, that we might spend our lives in service and obedience, so that we be not ashamed when the Lord's eternal Sabbath begins for His elect.
In type, religious Israelites were responsible for three specific works on the Preparation day (these in addition to the basic preparations which must be made for the Sabbath): 1. Make certain you have tithed. 2. Make certain you have prepared the Sabbath needs and the food. 3. Make certain that you have prepared the lamp to be lit. In the fullfillment of this type, Christians are to 1. Make certain that we have done what is required of us in regards to obedient giving (the "tithe" having been abolished with the Levitical system), 2. Make certain that we have both prepared ourselves for the eternal rest by our own partaking of spiritual food and water, and that we have fed the Lord's sheep (our families, and those for whom we are responsible) with spiritual food and water, and 3. Make certain that our lamps are full and lit (Matthew, Chapter 25).
